What to expect from your first session?
During the initial therapy session we will discuss informed consent, which is one of the most important elements of therapy. The informed consent process provides you with all the important information that you need to make an informed decision about beginning therapy. In addition, we will spend time getting to know you and the reasons why you are seeking therapy. Finally, we will discuss what you want to accomplish (goals) during our time together, and we will answer any questions/concerns you have about the therapeutic process.
What to expect from your second session?
During the second session we will work collaboratively to determine the best treatment approach that will allow you to meet your goals. We will also discuss relevant educational information and appropriate skill development to facilitate the treatment process.
What to expect from the rest of your sessions?
During the third and subsequent we will work together to meet your goals developed during the initial session. Experiencing strong, and sometimes difficult emotions is common in therapy. Be assured that you are in control of how much emotional information you want to share, and you will not be forced to talk about anything you are not comfortable with. Painful emotions are difficult to express and feel, however, once these emotions are out in the open, you will have space for positive emotions to flourish.
Just as life throws us curve balls, your goals may evolve during our work together and that is okay. If that occurs we will discuss and pivot to a new plan of action/course of treatment.
If at any time during your therapy you determine that you and your psychologist are no longer a fit or you simply want to end therapy, please let your therapist know and if appropriate referrals to other therapists will be provided.
